  • Name: Stephanie Lehman
  • Undergraduate institution: Northern Kentucky University
  • Position: Program Support
  • Company name: VA Medical Center
  • Industry sector: Medical Field

Stephanie Lehman holds a program support position within the VA Medical Center. The position involves many administrative tasks but also requires data collection and analysis on patient demographics, diagnosis, etc. Stephanie has held this particular job for only 4 months, the position being a promotion from another position within the hospital. Prior to this position, Stephanie held a similar job within the physical therapy department, a position that also involved data collection and analysis but on a much smaller scale.

Currently, the program on which Stephanie works is in its sixth month. At this point, her primary task is to justify the program through mathematical reports. The most common mathematics used for this thus far has been statistics. Many reports are created based upon relationships between the numbers in the program and money earned for the hospital. The higher this correlation, the more successful our program is considered to be.

Stephanie earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics (with a track in statistics) from Northern Kentucky University. Thus far, she has found her courses in the design and analysis of experiments to have been extremely valuable resources, especially the textbooks and notes from the class. A course in calculus- based probability and statistics has also given knowledge pertinent to her current position.

Mathematics seems like a useless major when not accompanied by a teaching certificate. This position proves that absolutely wrong. The work involved cannot be completed without extensive mathematical and statistical background. A mathematics major is no longer just boys either. Girls have proven themselves to do very well in the typically male dominated field. Best of all, math can actually be fun!!!
